Fetal Fluoride Syndrome

An overlooked medical condition is about to be identified by us and given a name:  Fetal fluoride syndrome or FFS.  The harm caused in the womb by fluoride which causes a miscarriage, a stillbirth or a damaged child has been denied for far too long by the medical authorities in the UK.  It's time to 'up the ante' and challenge those who sponsor fluoridation with this new disease.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) has been recognised as a medical condition for many years.  Mothers-to-be are urged not to drink alcohol when pregnant. It's time that the medicos urge them not to indulge in drinking fluoride either since that will cause gestational distress, reduced intelligence, impaired neural development, a possible miscarriage or a possible stillbirth.

Fluoride has been classified by three respected institutions in the last 5 years* as being a 'developmental neurotoxin'.  Why is this classification being ignored by the UK's medical authorities?

Referring to the new condition by its name should make it more tangible and less easily swept under the carpet.

Here is an extract from Miriam Stoppard's book "Conception, Pregnancy and Birth".  On p. 132, she says:

"
What you eat when you’re pregnant is even more important than you might think. Research shows that it not only affects your baby at birth, but also appears to have a long-term effect throughout your child’s life. It’s important to drink plenty of fluids, too. When you’re pregnant you have nearly 50 per cent more blood in your body than usual, so you need to keep up your fluid intake. Water is best. Don’t cut down on your fluid intake if your hands and feet swell – it won’t make any difference to this type of fluid retention.”

Stoppard, M. (2008). Conception, Pregnancy and Birth (2008) London: Dorling Kindersley ISBN 978-1-4053-2972-9

We know that fluoride, being such a tiny atom, is capable of crossing the placenta.  So, even before birth, the unborn child starts to bio-accumulate fluoride.  This does not promise a healthy future.

“Water fluoridation delivers a drug to infants at a level which would be gross malpractice if prescribed by a physician or dentist."
(Source: Dentist David Kennedy, International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT).  IAOMT is a network of dental, medical and research professionals which supports the effort to inform consumers about health risks from water fluoridation.)

The March 2012 edition of the British National Formulary (BNF) has the following to say about fluoride supplementation, i.e.  - sodium fluoride lozenges, oral drops and mouth rinses which are sold by pharmacies:

"Water content less than 0.3ppm (0.3mgF/litre water):  CHILD up to 6 months - NONE;  6 mths - 3 years F- 0.25ppm daily; 3 - 6 years F- 0.5ppm; over 6 years F- 1ppm."

A child less than 6 months living in an area where the water contains less than 0.3ppm fluoride should not receive fluoride supplementation.  But if the baby is living in an area where the water contains 1ppm, the baby is overdosing.  If a baby drinks 1.3 litres of baby formula made up with fluoridated tap water each day it's getting 1.3ppm Fluoride each day.  But the limit is 0.3ppm Fluoride per litre which equals 0.4ppm fluoride per day.  The fluoridated baby is receiving 0.9ppm fluoride per day too much!

There is growing concern about the effect that fluoride has on the foetus, the new-born infant and toddler.  This page has been written in order to summarise these negative harms.  (References will be added progressively.)

Here is a video conversation between Prof. A.K. Susheela and Dr Paul Connett of The Fluoride Action Network (USA) which was recorded in 2008.  It deals with maternal health in Delhi, India, with particular emphasis on the negative health effects caused by fluoride in drinking water.  LINK

The foetus

The blood-brain barrier is very much undeveloped during pregnancy.  Fluoride crosses the placenta and gets into every type of tissue although it is found more in bones and the brain. (LINK).  The placenta has not evolved to filter out all of the very small fluoride atoms (anions).  Since fluoride is not an essential element and is not needed to improve the structure of embryonic bones, and since the body has not evolved a way to render it harmless, foetal growth is negatively affected because fluoride is an enzyme inhibitor.  Where the expectant mother lives in a fluoridated area, this often results in underweight babies and/or premature babies.  Preterm and low weight babies are at a greater risk of not surviving.

Read the research published in New York in November 2009: Hart: Water Fluoridation and Pre-Term Birth

Moreover, if fluoride weakens the growing embryo, by reducing, for example, the amount of energy that each cell creates, is it not likely that fluoridation is partly responsible for some miscarriages and stillbirths?

Age 1 - 6 weeks

The blood-brain barrier (bbb) is still undeveloped until the 6th week of life although even this fact remains in doubt and it could be that the bbb remains 'leaky' for far longer depending on the health status of the baby.  Premature babies have to wait even longer before the barrier is fully resistant to fluoride.  A premature baby who is fed on baby formula made up with fluoridated tap water is challenged for a longer period of time due to fluoride getting into the brain, tissues and bones. Moreover, there will be a certain amount of absorption of fluoride through the delicate skin during bath time.  (Breast-fed babies are in less danger at this stage because the human breast filters out fluoride even if the mother continues to drink fluoridated water and eats fluoridated food.)  At least 23 research studies throughout the World have measured the intelligence of children born in fluoridated regions and most found that intelligence was reduced in these regions compared with similar groups in non-fluoridated regions.

British parents are not advised by health visitors or midwives not to give their babies formula made up with fluoridated tap water.  However, the information is now on the Internet but has to be searched for and only if parents know it's there in the first place!.  The American Dental Association and the British Fluoridation Society (but, strangely enough, not the British Dental Association) have now gone on record to recommend to parents not to use fluoridated tap water when making up their baby's formula.  Meanwhile the NHS is lagging behind and seems more concerned with warning parents about bottled water with high sodium content than it is warning them off fluoridated water.  Go to ADA study confirms dangers of fluoridated water, especially for babies

A word about bottle caries.  This is caused by leaving the feeding cup spout or the teat of a bottle of sugared liquid in a baby's mouth while the baby is sleeping.   Inexperienced parents are responsible for causing this decay in their children's baby teeth.  Many extractions under general anaesthetic are necessitated by bottle caries - caries which cannot be prevented by water fluoridation.  The appearance of bottle caries is different to that of dental caries which is caused by too many sweet foods and liquids and where the parent does not clean its toddler's teeth on a regular basis.    Pro-fluoridationists do not seem to discriminate between bottle caries and caries caused by poor dental hygiene and sweet acidic foods.  For example, in response to two Freedom of Information requests, Southampton PCT have been unable to supply data of the incidence of bottle caries and they lump all extractions performed on very young children together under one heading - neglect.  This results in pro-fluoridationists justifying fluoridation programmes without their having regard to the fact that bottle caries cannot be prevented by water fluoridation.

Age 7 weeks >

The bottle-fed baby continues to drink baby formula made up with fluoridated tap water.  During the first months of life, the milk teeth are forming in the gums but because fluoride inhibits metabolism, the milk teeth can be late in coming through.  The normal time for the first tooth of a non-fluoridated child to erupt is 6 months (lower incisor).  We have to go back to pre-1950 dental text books in order to establish the normal milk tooth milestones which were earlier than in present-day fluoridated children.  Delayed growth of teeth means that the baby starts to chew food later in life and swallowing of food is laboured.  Moreover, because the child doesn't have enough teeth by the time it's ready to talk, talking is delayed.  This could have a negative effect on the child's sociability.  Meanwhile the child continues to ingest fluoridated water and moves on to eating manufactured baby food made with de-boned (fluoridated) meat and fruit purées made from fruit sprayed with pesticides, many of which contain fluoride as the active substance.

Whilst the fluoridated child is a toddler, and is using fluoridated toothpaste which many children swallow when their parents' backs are turned, fluoride, by disrupting an enzyme responsible for enamel integrity, damages the growth of the secondary teeth whilst they are still in the gums.  41% of children living in a fluoridated area are in danger of developing Dental Fluorosis in their secondary teeth.  12% will have, throughout their lifetime, Dental Fluorosis of aesthetic concern.  This condition is permanent and cannot be bleached out.

It is at this age that a child who is over-exposed to fluoride will run the risk of damage being caused to its thyroid gland by fluoride displacing iodide.  Iodide is essential for efficient metabolism.  Where it's deficient or where there's too much fluoride, thyroid function will start to be challenged and, in extreme cases, will be disrupted.  A symptom of hypothyroidism in many young children is out-of-control weight gain.  There are other causes of weight gain in children and fluoride may not be the culprit in every case.

Absorption of fluoride from swimming pool water and hot bath water continues as well.  The child is gradually introduced to convenience foods and drink, many of which contain fluoride and excitotoxins such as aspartame and monosodium glutamate..

Ages 9-10

At this age, the negative health effects become apparent - in two ways.  A child who has over-dosed on fluoride will show signs of dental fluorosis on its permanent teeth (LINK).  Secondly, girls who have over-dosed on fluoride start puberty two-three years earlier than found in non-fluoridated girls of the same age.  This has serious implications for society and, particularly for the precocious teenage girl's future success in life.  Fluoride intoxication could be one of the explanations for why there are so many 'wild' young teenage girls and why there are so many teenage pregnancies.  Is the DH's policy of fluoridating us largely responsible for sexualising our children?  We are all exposed to many chemicals throughout our lifetime and there will be other chemicals which are responsible for disrupting the endocrine system but research has shown that fluoride reduces the production of melatonin, thus triggering puberty.

The damage done to a young child's body varies depending on upbringing - dental hygiene training, exercise, diet - so it is postulated that children living in socially deprived conditions are more likely to become physically damaged by fluoride.  Yet it is for the benefit of these very same children that fluoride was put into the water.  It's a terrible penalty to pay to have one's health and secondary teeth ruined for the sake of 'improved' dental statistics collected at the first school dental examination at age 5.  And then there's the question of reduced intelligence - but how on earth are parents to know whether or not their child would have been more intelligent if the child hadn't been exposed to fluoride?

The madness continues with children being encouraged to drink fluoridated milk in primary school (LINK) as well as fluoridated salt as a replacement for normal table salt.

There's also the interesting contradictory stance adopted by the American Dental Association which, in 1936, declared fluoride as being a 'general protoplasmic poison' only to agree with the Centers for Disease Control's 1999 statement that fluoridation was one of the 10 greatest achievements in public health in the 20th Century to then recognising that concerned parents may wish to use low fluoride water when making up their baby's formula to then rescinding this advice and laying the responsibility on the dental practitioner to advise parents about the use of fluoride in baby formula "being congizant of the potential risks of enamel fluorosis development".  Go to The American Dental Association's Shifting Ground for a fuller article on this topic.

In the early part of the 20th century, it was medical practice to recommend uranium tablets as well as uranium lotions for people to rub onto their bodies in order to relieve pain.  In the 1930s - 1960s, it was medical practice in Germany to administer fluoride to patients suffering from hyperthyroidism.  This practice ceased because of the difficulty of administering the chemical even though the treatment did actually work. (LINK

In the 1950s and 1960s, it was medical practice for depressed and mentally disturbed people to be lobotomised.  In the mid-20th century and early 21st century it was (and is) medical practice to add an enzyme inhibitor to the public water supply in order to delay (oops - sorry - to prevent) dental decay.

Instead of developing into a humane society, it seems that we're going backwards into authoritarian madness.

It's a world that I don't much like living in but I'm certainly not going to shuffle off this earth until I have been instrumental in stopping this idiocy.
